Meet Our Director - Mark Lewis
Mark has been singing since he was a baby (so his mother says). He grew up singing with his family in church where his father directed the choir. He learned guitar from his older brothers and began singing spontaneous harmony to most songs.
He graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music) and began singing with various professional choirs. One evening in 1987 he was invited to sing with a Barbershop quartet and didn’t return home until 3:00 a.m.
This began a love of music in the Barbershop style. Mark has the distinction of directing choruses not only in the Sweet Adelines, but also in the Barbershop Harmony Society and Harmony Inc. He has also coached many quartets and choruses, and teaches voice privately.
Mark has been the director of the West Island Chorus since August 2006. After a year of settling in, the Chorus achieved a 96 point increase at contest winning the Most Improved Chorus and a third place medal in the AA category. He looks forward to more success with the chorus as they strive to achieve their goals.
He is the proud father of five children, and it is a thrill to have his oldest daughter singing in the West Island Chorus.
Mark’s Barbershop achievements include:
1990 District Quartet Champion 1991, 1992 Quartet Representative at the Men’s International Contest 1991 Division One Barbershopper of the Year 2002 Member of the Silver Medalist Chorus “Toronto Northern Lights”
